Welcome to My Blog...

where I will promote the karat gold and sterling silver genuine gem stone jewelry that I lovingly design and fashion as well as muse over the daily doings of my American family struggling to keep our heads above water in 2010.

What Will the New Year Bring?

I am a wife...
A mother...
A grandmother...
A homeowner...
A business owner...

So, I have several ways to look at what the New Year 2010 will bring.  Not to be shallow and only look at what 2010 will bring to me in my own back yard,  I must mention that of course I wish 1st and foremost for PEACE on EARTH and SAFETY for all those who fight for our beloved country in times of terrorism and war.

But - I have always taken personal responsibility for that over which I can control.
We live in a multi-cultural community...
Our family is multi-racial...
Our children take responsibility for their actions...
They are teaching their children to do the same...
We work hard to take care of each other in tough times...
We will take care of you too if you are in need...

As a simple person with simple needs, this is my gift to the world, this is my contribution to the growth of America.

Happy New Year!

Definitely Needing To Take Things Slowly....

I'm so unsure these days.  And, I'm a Libra you know. In certain times in my life I have been fickle to the bone - but not for a very long time.  Since I am the queen of balance, and the master of debate and the peacemaker of my immediate and extended family it's hard for me to be so unsure.

I have not been able to find a "real" job... What I mean by "real" is one in addition to my jewelry business that does not produce enough income to live on.  I wish I was more successful doing what I love to do but between the glut of jewelry designers in the market and the ever changing SEO requirements I am plumb running out of time in making a success of janaes jewels in time to keep the roof over my head.

So, back to my indecision....
I've been out of work for 1 year and almost 22 months now. I'm overqualified for almost all of the jobs I've applied for. I've only had ONE interview. I really want to work close to home as a huge tradeoff for a larger salary commanded closer to my states capitol city....but maybe I need to travel again....
What to do?
I go in circles.
What really makes sense?

This is the type of quandry that I help others settle.  Why can't I help myself?  Perhaps I can "will" the answers to myself?  Are one of you readers astute enough hear what I'm saying and see what I'm not?

See, I'm always so full of hope - despite my dire situation. (silly-huh?)
Because I'm a good person that always does good things for others. (I can hear you negative people laughing now)
But that's what makes me tick.
I'm double nickels you know.
My sister-in-law says that good things happen when you hit double nickels...

Help!

Caught Up in... Real Life

Ahhh - the Holiday Season...
I don't know about you but I've been sooooo busy.  Part of my busy always tends to be spinning my wheels and feeling overwhelmed about all that I have to do.
Like -
Finish decorating the tree...I'm about to put it off until tomorrow (sound familiar?)
Wrap presents...there's always tomorrow (sound familiar?)
Clean - I mean really clean the house for the family gathering on Christmas Eve and Day (sound familiar?)
I just get so overwhelmed - and then of course there's the regular stuff too - like laundry, and cleaning the bathrooms!

What's really been bugging me though is slacking on my blog.  I'm not sure that anyone (besides me) even reads it, but just in case you (or you) do, I hate to let you down. So, I'm here to check in and see if you guys are doing OK.

I'm OK too.
Salute!

So Much to Think About...

I wrote a  letter to my President today.  Yes, to President Obama - the President of the United States.  I know that I am not alone being hit hard by the economy today, but I am in such a desperate place that I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain....so I put it all out there and will wait to see what (if anything) happens.

Now, don't get me wrong - I have worked all of my adolescent and adult life and have never felt that anyone owed me anything...not even my own family.  But it's different today.  Today you have to advocate for yourself - for your basic human rights in every way - and only the strong survive - so I must be feeling strong today cause I'm determined to survive.

Root for me - OK?
(thanks)

Good News! It has been a Buy & Sell Weekend...

What that means is I was able to purchase a couple of gifts that were a bit pricey for my grandkids because I had a pretty good selling weekend!

You know how they say "easy come...easy go"? Not me, not to be corny but it's definitely "hard come...easy go"!

Anyway - Christmas is all about the kids.  The big ones and the little ones.  My husband has the youngest spirit of anyone that I know personally.  I've actually seen the 10 yr old in him as he exuberantly slid down a railing (at 65 no less).  He is a bit older than I - and is quite proud of the fact that as the sign in our kitchen goes: "An Old Rooster and a Young Chick Live Here"

So, when it is said that you're only as old as you feel - no doubt it is more true than false.  Not sure how I got on this subject - but hopefully it will have made you smile.

I'm smiling!

Been Sick AGAIN...but Gotta Dance!

Just a bad cold - nothing serious.

BUT, I have Hubby's Christmas Party tonight, so I have been (under orders) to rest since Monday so that I can be ready to dance my --- off tonight.  We have a reputation (of sorts) to keep up...kinda funny..our kids would think it hilarious that we manage to be the life of the party!

Anyway - yesterday I spent some time trying to figure what to wear. That's always an issue for me, and if I don't figure it out so that I'm ready (on time) it can put a damper on things.  Nothing new...but I have a lot of clothes to choose from.  I have 2 or 3 dresses that I'm considering with a definite front runner in black.

Now, I'm a jewelry designer - right?  I feel that I need either a "statement" necklace in silver tones or none at all....and then earrings to match, of course.  Problem is that I've always been a Gold girl, or a multi-colored Gold girl, but I def need silver or white gold tones for the likely dress that I will wear. Well, no problem I'll just make something ....

But it's Chistmas time...and I still have tons of shopping to do and I have to finish my jewelry gifts...and I'll be late...and in trouble....

Oh boy, I'm gonna have to skip the statement necklace.

See ya!

It's All About The Future!

Well if you read my post yesterday - I've had some hard decisions to make regarding how I am spending my money in this tight economy with jewelry design being such a glutted market. So, today I cancelled my ProStore account. I was intending to do it anyway, BUT was turned on to Alexa which gives ranking info and great stats on your site traffic and found that my domain did not register AT ALL!

No wonder I have no sales...

Now, I'm no brainiac when it comes to the www, and I certainly have much to learn... but I work really hard, and I expect that the web developers that sponsor such sites and promise to market them will do so. When I called to cancel, they wanted to give me credits and work with me but I know now that it is a wasted effort.

BTW, this Blog of mine is way down in the ranking...way down...but I can see that it's gaining a little every day!

In the meantime...I have GREAT jewelry and Fabulous prices in my current shops....

New website for janaes jewels with SoopSee

Well, I'm the eternal optimist plugging along trying to make some money on my Bee-yoo-ti-full jewelry and yesterday spent some time catching up on reading the blogs I follow when I read about an opportunity to launch a new website that will carry my domain but use my pics and listings from Etsy. I saw this posted on http://www.divine3designs.blogspot.com/ blog, and she said that it is simple to use...and it sure is.  It is still in Beta form, so the Intro rate is really inexpensive...or you can also get a scaled down version for free.

Well I jumped on it because...for those of you who read any of what I write, listing on the various websites that I have shops on is WORK. The beauty of the SoopSee site is that I can register my own domain but still import the pictures, descriptons and pricing that I have already established in Etsy. I can then use my Etsy shop shopping cart through Paypal for payment.  In addition, I can import my blog and twitter account to my new site, get google analytics  and also track my Etsy "heart" activity.  So - the 2 are somewhat tied together but with the distinction of http://www.janaesjewels.com/ vs. http://www.janaesjewels.etsy.com/.

I will probably now cancel my eBay ProStore (http://www.janaesjewelsandjems.com/) that is just not user friendly and has had little or no traffic since I reopened it a few months ago. I do much better on my regular eBay site with my premium store than I do in the ProStore...

So we'll see how it works out. You might want to see for yourself if it is worth it.  Take a peek at http://www.soopsee.com/  to see if there is any benefit for you.

And me...well I'm just as hopeful as can be...

Til tomorrow

Feelin' the Holiday Spirit Today

Yesterday we got lazy, but today daughter Annie, Hubby and I got busy and decorated the house - at least part of it.

No tree yet - but the lights are on - the furniture is moved around to accomodate the extra trimmings and we are looking quite festive!

So, decide to close out the day with you, my dear bloggers, if any of you are listening (or reading).  My spirit is lifted today

Ruth, you are in my thoughts...here's hoping you'll get the next vacation. (sm)

Later.

Chillin' with Hubby and Maggy

It's been a cold, damp and dismal Saturday here in Southcoast, MA. After running my regular Saturday errands with Hubby we headed home with plans to take the Christmas decorations down from the attic. Got home, started watching movies, got lazy and put off the Christmas decorations for another day!

Oh, by the way...Maggy is my 4 year old (bossy) pomeranian!

The good news is that I rarely chill with Hubby...he's a western movie nut, and watches Encore's Western channel every spare moment he has. During that time I'm usually making jewelry, listing jewelry, writing on my blog, dropping EC's etc, etc, (you know the drill).

But today I'm just chillin...

I have more than enough jewelry inventory so taking a break there...more than enough listed...so taking a break there too..  Besides listing is WORK!

All snuggled up in a fleece, on the couch with hubby and John Wayne's McClintock playing on the TV. Peace...and Harmony. It's a great night!

Am I Spinning My Wheels???

I'm probably the only one that can answer that...
I'm starting to feel that I AM spinning my wheels tho -
I tend to be very spiritual and this afternoon while cutting down brush, vines and some mysteriously sown elderberry bushes, I found myself looking for answers...

I design jewelry and sales are flat.
I tell others that only the strong survive in a competitive marketplace - Yes that is true, but with my limited resources and burgeoning debt, I am feeling very grey.
I am one of the strong...
But will I survive?

I'm looking for a sign...
I'd like to win the lottery tonite...
Or something...

Any ideas?

Ciao!

Blogging For Sales Brings Friends Instead

In trying to increase sales to my online shops on Etsy and eBay I've been following the sage advice of the many with more "blogging" experience than I. I've been dropping ec's (entrecards) for credits and find myself lost in a blog while trying to increase my speed and intensity of dropping.  For those of you that may be lost with this conversation - check out the entrecard immediately to the right of this post. You may join me and many more like me that are trying to build...something...it's not a one size fits all agenda.

But back to my point...
I'm making friends!
I'm finding some like me with similar interests...
and I'm finding others that are totally diverse with nothing obvious in common except that for one reason or another their "hook" gets me.

So, I'm making friends...and hoping to sell some jewelry as well!
Like I say in my sales scripts  - Take a Chance...What Do You Have To Lose?"

I'm practicing what I preach!
Tah-tah for now

Cyber Monday? Was it Good For You?

Well, almost 9pm ET on Cyber Monday.  I did lots of online shopping for 2 of my daughters...so made some sellers very happy. What was in it for me?  I got Microsoft Cashback credits for one, and double eBay/Paypal cash back credits as well! So, definitely was worth my time.

I sold a few things in my eBay and Etsy stores over the weekend and I'm still listing every day to keep my shops full and also to get some of my lesser seen items some exposure.  I'm trying to retrain my brain to make and sell niche items that other people want...not so much make and sell what I like.  My own personal style is pretty diverse - but not necessarily for younger adults - or tweens even.  From what I see on the Etsy Alchemy - there is a gold mine to be made for sellers of jewelry that appeals to those particular age groups. Will it be as much fun tho? That I'm not sure of...

One more thing...I listed 7 Pay It Forward (PIF) items that sold out in about 24 hrs. Tonight I received a request from one of the buyers to PIF a handmade glass pendant to me in my choice of colors.  I tried to refuse as the intention meant more to me than a pendant for myself, but was coaxed into it (sm) in green (the color of my eyes).  In fact, I love hand cut glass - and this will be quite special. So, here is a shout out to surlymermaid on Etsy!

Write to me dear readers...I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Affordable 14K and Sterling Silver Jewelry for Sale...Check It Out!

I just know it's going to happen...
I'll get a serious shopper who decides to shop for several gifts and VOILA...it makes my day.

My strategy is to keep my items fresh and keep listing new items daily. I usually design and make jewelry in stretches and then list in stretches. Well between now and the New Year I will design and list more simultaneously to keep the new items flowing....

Hopefully in and OUT the door just as quickly...(sm)

Just in case you don't know where to find my items...

PIF - Pay It Forward in JanaesJewels Etsy Shop? Good Karma!

Although I have dealt with unemployment and illness (and all of the major economic factors that result) in my immediate family over the last 2 years, I still have much to be grateful for. I also have the humility to know that there are many more out there less fortunate than I.

So, while listing on Etsy today, I once again listed several items in my PIF section, and hope to add at least 15 more. So far I am listing Sterling Silver Gemstone earrings for .20 cents with $2.00 shipping. I will probably expand that to include bracelets and rings. You know why? Because the Holidays are about giving to others, and I cannot imagine the blow to the spirit for those who have nothing to give to their children or other loved ones.  Fortunately I am able to make many of my own gifts, and am savvy enough to make a few dollars here and there...but many are not.

So, this is how I am filling my spirit this holiday season...
If you are one of those in need there are no questions...no judgement.  Visit my Etsy shop at http://www.janaesjewels.etsy.com/ and see if I have anything that fits your needs in my PIF section.

Blessings to us all.

Thankful for What?

I have 4 grown children of my own, 2 grown stepchildren (hate that step part), 5 grandchildren with many more to come (God willing) as the 5 only represents 3 out of 6 kids....and I am so very thankful for each and every one of them.
I come from a family of "scholars" that took school and education very seriously. It is in my blood to write as a form of expression - and public speaking isn't far behind.  At the Thanksgiving dinner table it is hard to judge the mood of my family in advance (depending on how harried I am feeling, how many of my dear family arrive late, whether young Troy wins or loses his 1st varsity football game etc, etc) but if I am still in todays mood I feel that I need to address what each of them mean to me. We've had many blessings mixed in with significant hits reflecting todays economy and I feel the need to keep a positive perspective on what family means in 2009 going forward.

Of course, my own children know about our culture of "speeches" before grace and dinner, but with the growing family and newcomers it is often amusing to see the quizzical looks on faces, or panic as they hear their names mentioned in welcome or appreciation...but this is what we do. And, this is what I will do on Thursday - Thanksgiving Day, 2009. I will give thanks to the Lord of all first, but also to my family so that they know how important they are to me (us), how pivotal a part they play in my (our) world, and understand what is expected of them as they grow to become the very best persons that they can be.

No one can ever be too loved, or thanked too much, or encouraged beyond need.

This is what I give back to the world...in the form of my family and acknowledgement of all of the special blessings that have been bestown upon me.

Laptop Crash and I'm Back - Finally!

...did you notice?

Well, I'm back.  It's tough to lose your "connection" to your business and the tools to your business. The hardware is hard enough to replace, but the software, urls, favorites, logins, passwords on and on.  It's brutal...
But back to business now...and it's closer to the Holidays.  Are any of you out in the world spiking any sales? Care to share?  I'd love to hear (as usual) what is selling in your world.

I've opened my Etsy store http://www.janaesjewels.etsy.com/ to Holiday layaway. It's easier to offer on Etsy than eBay or even my own website http://www.janaesjewelsandjems.com/ .  I'm willing to work out customer specific terms on a case by case basis.

So, if you or anyone you know is looking for top of the line jewelry products in Sterling Silver, Karat Gold and Genuine Gemstones...check out my Etsy store.

Until next time...

What jewelry are YOU buying for the Holidays?

Are you buying Gold...Silver...Earrings...Bracelets...What????
Just curious, of course.
I'm on my never-ending quest to find out what people want these days. Not to say that I'm clueless - I know what my current customers are buying.  I also know that as long as there are females (mostly females) on this earth that there will be a desire for jewelry.  And, since I want to be YOUR jewelry designer it matters to me what you are looking for.

It suprises me that folks are willing to purchase gold and silver plated items knowing that they will tarnish beyond repair and despite my general unwillingness to do so, I may actually break down and purchase some gold filled/plated findings.

For those of you not familiar - Findings are the bare bones of jewelry making...clasps, crimps, beads, headpins, jumprings, wire,  etc...all the the fastenings that hold the goods together.

Back to gold filled findings...I guess I can understand this for jewelry items not used every day as the price of solid gold is over 1K per ounce.  I always think of heirloom quality to pass down to your children - and grandchildren.  BUT, if that is what the buyer wants...I guess I will do my best pricing to keep the customer in solid gold - but if not successful - a sale in my shop is a sale I want to keep in my shop.  Make sense?

So far as silver plate is concerned - I will stick with Sterling Silver. The price of sterling is at a high these days, but not so high that I will substitute inferior product....and I promise you won't regret that.

Tah - Tah for now....

Did you miss me?

It's been a week - did you miss me?

October is Birthday month in my immediate family.  We have a stretch of 4 day intervals for a couple of weeks including my Mother-in-Laws 94th which was over the past weekend.  So, between that and my Open House on Sunday...I'm still trying to catch up.

Deb Davey from Australia (Two Cheeky Monkeys - Etsy shop) won my Pink Tourmaline ring that was a featured giveaway at MistyRidge Design's Blog. I hope she LOVES it!

Not feeling too chatty today - so l will keep it short. I have a custom order that I need to finish tonight so I'll be on my way!
Holla back...

Open House on Sunday

Every day is a challenge - should I just list to my various stores or should I be making more stock? I'm not a depression child, but was definitely raised by one so I never think I have enough.
I made one bracelet today.
And, I'm keeping you all up to date on my blog.
I have a custom order that I will start tonite as I got the components that I needed today - save one but it is the finishing piece anyway.
I also have a detailed marquise citrine and ruby beaded necklace that I am working on.  It will have a double swag affect that is strung on beading wire and then attached to...either yellow gold or white gold chain.
My dilemma - I like yellow gold and feel it compliments the yellow of the citrine beads AND the red of the rubies. Most people today are wearing white gold or sterling silver and it would look OK this way too..but...
Any opinions?  Of course, I want to sell it. Let me know your thoughts!
Now, on to my open house on Sunday.
My daughter-in-law Christina asked me if she could have a home party at my house.
Sure, I said.
Well, she pointed out to me that we could double up and have it be a jewelry party as well.
Sure, I said.
I washed my windows in the living room today and changed my drapes from summer/fall to fall/winter. I need a focal for the center of the traverse rod that pulls all of my colors together - so I will be digging for something tomorrow.  I am seeing something with fringe that would pull together reds, blues, pinks, dark wood and antique furniture.  I will also need to set up my displays in a cohesive fashion.
Wanna come?
If you are in Massachusetts and feel like making the trip, leave a comment.  I promise I will get back to you.  Leave an email address to reach you.
Ciao!

Halfway Through October!

I've noticed over the years that Halloween as a celebrated holiday just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Well, I've never been big on "dressing up" for costume parties  - actually, I always thought of my birthday (10/18)  as the end of celebrations til Thanksgiving & Christmas and then a huge break from birthdays and more expense until the birthdays in my immediate family start rolling again the end of April.  I'm not particularly "set in my ways" but I just cannot afford more for Halloween than candy for the "trick or treaters" that ring my doorbell on Halloween night!  You see, I'm one of those Christmas shoppers that start early and don't stop until the stores close.  That's when it is over for me!
Not because I think that everyone is or should be like me BUT just in case I have a full store of  affordable jewelry gifts for your giftees...come check them out.  More than 1/2 of the inventory is under $30.00 but see for yourself @  http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5722713 .

I've got a couple of new necklaces in longer lengths.  The 1st is 36 Inches of Sterling Silver chain with huge blocks of natural light Amethyst every 12 inches.  There is no clasp, but this necklace is long enough to wear doubled in several ways.

Also, a double strand - 42 inches of very light red Carnelian Rounds with Sterling Silver Cubes and a shorter strand of  Golden Coral Tubes, Bronze Freshwater Pearls and Hessonite Garnet Rondels. The colors contrast and blend beautifully and the two necklaces are totally independent of each other with separate sterling silver clasps - but are actually designed to be worn together! TWO for the price of ONE!

These necklaces will be listed in my Etsy store - and likely my eBay store as well.  If you are interested in them before they are listed...just leave a comment on my blog here and I'll see what we can do.  Oh, the price?  $29.99 for the Sterling and Amethyst piece and $34.99 for the Double Strand of Caramels and Browns!
Ciao for Now...

Some GREAT Holiday Gifts...Come See

As much as I want all of you to do all of your Holiday shopping with me (sm) I really want to share with you some of the CUTEST items that I have picked up for my grandkids.
1st - My granddaughter Samira, my one and only, is such a girly girl it's never hard to shop for her but she literally has everything....Well, I was perusing the Etsy Alchemy list (as usual, looking for work and looking to see what is selling) and I saw the cutest pens that were personalized....
So, you know I had to check them out. But you've got to see them too...

The maker of these beaded personalized pens is Dava6 -  http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5976373 and she made these and had em shipped them to me in about 2 hrs flat! And, I had my choice of colors, choice of clip art, and choice of ink color even. Fabulous customer service and eager to please.  Just the way we want all of our shopping experiences to be. So, check out Dava's shop. In addition to these adorable pens, she also does hand stamping creations in birthday and all occasion cards,  journals - I even see some "Twighlight" themed merchandise in her store! Dava's got 2 "littles" and could use the work - Please do yourself a favor and check her out!

Now, on to another Etsy handmade find...
I was looking for some little shoes for my youngest grandson DJ.  He's a little slip of a 15 month old  boy who has some health issues and is always cold so, I was looking and looking and looking through the many Etsy pages of shoes and slippers until I found "Shoopers".  OMG - these were perfect, warm enough to keep his little feet warm while indoors, but durable enough with a textured faux leather sole so that on quick trips out DJ can keep his shoopers on! Now, did I forget to say that DJ's Mom and Dad, Sis and Bro are all HUGE Steelers Fans?  Well, that was the deal breaker right there. And, here is a pic of them...

I can't wait for him to see these! DJ's whole nursery is Steelers! Well, credit to the Etsy store on these. Check out Momsblankies @ http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6222259 where Mom Shaunna makes her "unique and stylish gifts for babies".

So, that's it for today.
GREAT weekend to all...

Sold in Five Minutes Flat!

I guess it doesn't take much to amaze me - and I'm always so happy with sales, so imagine how tickled I was to complete listing 5 items on Etsy last evening and found that a pair of bright orange faceted carnelian and sterling silver earrings I had listed had sold before I even finished listing the matching bracelet! I figure they sold within minutes of listing...now why doesn't that happen all of the time?

That is one of the really great things about having an Etsy shop...your listings are posted for all to see, and some really do watch the listings as they come up and grab really quickly whatever it is that they like.  Perhaps it was the bright orange that caught this young womans eye...

Anyway, I'm still ramping up for the Holidays.  I do see some clear trends, but am wondering what are you seeing? Feel free to leave comments.  I would love to hear your point of view.

S'all for now...

Stretch Bracelets for Nerve Damaged Wrists in 14K and Gemstones...

Well, I know I didn't create stretchy bracelets but I call the ones I make my "Comfort Line" or "Signature" Pieces.  Why?  Because I make them out of 10K, 14K and 18K Yellow, Rose and White Gold...and yes of course Sterling Silver too.  Add Precious and Semi-Precious Gemstones to the mx and what you have is an incredibly lite and comfortable bracelet that can be worn by women or men that have had nerve damage in their hands or wrists and cannot normally tolerate a watch even on their wrist.  That would be me - and I now have made hundreds of them for people with the same problems.

Oh yeah...
AND, they won't snag your hose or tights
OR, catch on your delicate fabrics
ALSO, they are less expensive than a typical bracelet in Silver or Gold because you're eliminating a clasp, crimps, jumprings etc...

What do you think of these?  They are custom made - just think about your favorite gems and what you would like them to look like on a bracelet..

Then there are far less formal and less expensive bracelets - more gems than gold ...

The price for what you see above ranges from $19.99 to $75.00 and even though I mention that I make my "Comfort" bracelets in Sterling Silver - all of the bracelets that you see above are in 14K Yellow Gold, 10K Rose Gold and 14K White Gold
You can place orders here on my blog site through the comment link - or at my Etsy store - for which you'll find a link on the right column on this blog.
I also sell them on eBay as seller janae33 and janaes jewels & jems or http://www.janaesjewelsandjems.com/
Think that about covers it..
Any questions - let me know!

Solitary Sunday, World War I Souvenir of France SILK Apron, Vintage Linens...and more

As Hubby is helping eldest son in his kitchen design, I am taking a restful day puttering through my blogs and catching up on others news as well as my own. With the help of others I have experienced a huge increase in hits to my Etsy shop which will hopefully translate to Holiday shopping and sales.
Specifically, thanks to Heather of Misty Ridge Designs http://mistyridgedesigns.blogspot.com/ for sponsoring one of my semi-precious gemstone rings in her blog giveaways. There is still ONE week to go, so it isn't too late to sign up to win this beauteous Pink Tourmaline, White Sapphire, Sterling Silver Ring! Just click on the url and look on the left column for "blog giveaway".
C'mon - it's a win-win for sure.
On to other fronts...I have been listing and selling Vintage Linens for a dear family friend who is caring for her Mom in assisted living. Mom is suffering from Alzheimers disease. Assisted living is very costly and all self pay in this case so the family is liquidating all assets to keep Mom in the very best care. My ebay shop is chock full of Tablecloths, Napkins, Tea cloths, Pillow Cases, Scarves, Runners, Doilies and more.
One of my featured articles up for auction and very, very special is a Post World War I "Souvenir of France" silk apron.  It is one of the very delicate embroidered types made out of the most fine of silks and is in exceptional condition. Please check out my auction and/or spread the word to any of your acquaintances that collect Antique items from the Post World War I era.

Isn't it just gorgeous?

The bid price is really low right now with no reserve. Check it out!
So, what else is new?
Today feels like a comfort food day. It's in the low 60's but will drop very low tonite.  Maybe some hot soup or stew for dinner?  Kale soup with Portuguese sausage (Linguica) would be wonderful. Do any of you deliver? (sm)
I guess that's it for now.
Love to all...

Where did the week go? It seems like just yesterday I was planning for the day of ironing and listing vintage linens with sis Kate and friend Laurie. Well it's Friday again, and it's been a busy week and I've missed a couple of days here. I'll try not to make it a habit!

Welcome Kate...

I twisted her arm to follow my blog.

I'll try to keep it fun.

Anyway - finished up some Etsy Alchemy work last night. I had two fabulous customers wanting entirely different type designs. One in 14K Yellow Gold and one in Sterling Silver.
The 1st picture is Hessonite Garnet Rondels attached to a 14K yellow gold chain.

The 2nd picture - Handblown glass beads - 28mm Rounds on Sterling Silver chain with a toggle clasp.

I made a bunch of stretch bracelets - I call them my signature pieces. I have nerve damage in my wrists and lots of athritis throughout mybody and as much as I love jewelry, it isn't always easy to wear it due to the weight of it. Now, I know that stretchy bracelets are not new, but I make them with 10K & 14K gold beads in white rose and yellow gold. So, you have the luxury of solid gold or gemstone and gold bracelets but without the heaviness of the metal and clasps. I'll post a couple when I take pics...and will let you know where I list them.

Not sure what's up for the weekend.

I'll probably touch base at least once.

As for all of you...Have a great one and think about letting me hook you and yours up for the holidays!!!!

Janaes Jewels...Who Am I?

You probably wouldn't guess, but I am a Project Manager by trade.  Oh, an UNemployed Project Manager that is.  I was an early victim of our economy fall out early in the fray back in February of 2008. I worked in data and telecom for Strategic Products and Services in New Jersey>Netversant New England in Boston, MA>Avaya in Braintree, MA>Expanets in Braintree, MA>Lucent Technologies in Providence RI>AT&T General Business Systems in Boston, MA>AT&T Communication>Middleboro, Taunton and Wareham, MA.
From 1986 - 2008 I was a mover and shaker for AT&T and did what I called the AT&T Shuffle.  In other words, I did the jobs I needed to do where they needed to be done and at whatever time they needed to be done.  Originally my motive was for the promise of a pension and benefits.  But as you can see from my "spin" as the mother company AT&T went public and started to split...and split...and split... I ended up far from home, traveling way too much and working more than a double 40 hour work week.

Lost my pension...worked harder to make up for it

Companies bought and sold...worked harder to make up for it

Industry went BUST...still working harder TRYING to make up for it

What has this to do with anything?  Well, after years of working all of my faculties to the bone I have been trying to make my "passion" be my bread maker.  You see, jewelry making was a relaxing way for me to unwind in an anonymous hotel room after a grueling day with my clients...
My sister Kate and I started with "Kates Kreative", she being the beader and me the business woman and stone setter. Kate has the passion I do, but not the drive, so eventually we parted ways and I became the one woman show that I am today.  I do understand the difference between us...Kate gives up easily and I am too thick headed to give up! So, I'm still here, for the duration and I'm counting on all of you, dear readers, to help me stay here.

I am thrilled with the crossover of bloggers from Misty Ridge Designs to me here whilst trying to win the donated Pink Tourmaline Ring I sponsored to Misty Ridge. Heather's Misty Ridge's button is here on my blog.  Jump on over and check out the give away's requirements and take a chance.  That's what life is all about - right?

Besides, the holidays are coming and this is a really pretty ring that any female in your life would appreciate - especially if that particular female has an October Birthday (like me...10/18 ).
So, this is a small piece of who I was to make me who I am today...

Peace...OUT

Setting Gemstones, Misty Ridge Blog Giveaway, Autumn Leaves

Lots going on today!

As I have said before, almost all of my bench skills are self taught and I am always amazed when I see the proper and much easier way to do things right!  Like setting gemstones... I had a 30 minute lesson this morning from Greg Levin - bench jeweler extraordinaire - from Ernie Ross Jewelers and OMG how much simpler and faster the process is when you properly prepare a setting for the gem.  It was truly eye opening for me.

I need to sell more because I need to invest more in tools because as we all know "time is money" and I'm spending way too much time doing bench work manually...

I'm listing new jewelry pieces everyday on all of my sites readying myself for the holidays. Don't be shy - check out my goods and see how affordable my prices are. I'm shooting for one stop shopping here - and I'm serious when I say that. If you have $100.00 to spend - how many pieces of  precious metal gemstone jewelry would you expect to be able to buy?  Well, if you are super frugal, you could probably purchase 5 pieces in my Etsy store.  Actually the collection of 5 pieces you see below cost $84.96. So, I was off - you can actually purchase 6 pieces! What you see here is:

Picture One - A triple strand necklace of multi semi-precious gemstones with Sterling Silver findings for $29.99

Picture Two -  A pair of Sterling Silver, Citrine and Freshwater Pearl earings for $12.99

Picture Three - Swarovski Crystal and Freshwater Pearl Bracelet with Sterling Silver for $14.99

Picture Four - Aquamarine and Blue Sapphire Sterling Silver Ring for $14.99

Picture Five - Tree Agate and Sterling Silver Bracelet for $11.99

So what do you think of that??? Please let me know. Send me comments...

Oh, and important notice.  I have DONATED a Sterling Silver Pink Tourmaline Ring to Misty Ridge for her weekly giveaway.  Whoever wins this ring will receive it directly from me - FREE SHIPPING of course to anywhere in the US or International. Link to Misty Ridge here to sign up for this giveaway. Oh, and do me a favor - follow me too! I hate to think that I'm talking to myself here (hellloooooo).

Have you seen how pretty the fall leaves are these days? They sure are beauteous here in New England.  The weather is mild as well - sunny and low 70's during the day. What more can you ask for in the Northeast when you are approaching mid October without turning the heat on!

All for now.

Uh-Oh... Did I Miss October First?

See what happens when one has Tantrums? Only kidding.  I've been a bit fractured this week trying all sorts of new things like Entrecard (See the 1st sponsored ad to your right).  If you click it, it will help to increase my online exposure - and then I might be able to reach some folks other than my FIVE faithful friends from Etsy!
I have much to learn - but then I have much to share as well.
I make one of a kind jewelry, I bead, I twist wire, I work in precious metals.  I also set stones! Now that is really difficult to do well.  Any idea how many precious and semi-precious gemstones I've fractured? Like Emeralds, Rubies, Kyanite, Opals...
Some gems are almost indestructable...I've learned to "play" with them on difficult projects.
I'm self taught, but this coming Monday I am going to have a real lesson and I'm pretty excited.  It should make life easier for me because I really love making rings and don't see myself quitting anytime soon...
Tonite I set a pretty 6mm faceted Phrenite in Sterling Silver - a really pretty color of smoky green and eye clean! It is a trillion stone (triangle shaped) which in a round setting looks like a heart.
Yesterday I set a 11x8mm pear shaped Tangerine Garnet also in Sterling Silver. The Garnet is bright Orange and a little over 2 CTW. You can see it in my Etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=31938745

Also a 12mm round Solitaire Blue Sapphire Ring. This is quite large and weighs in at just over 5 CTW. The setting is Sterling Silver as well.  Have you seen the price of Gold and Platinum this week?  Over $1k per ounce.  It's crazy.  If you want to look at my ring though...here goes:
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=31939926

That's all for now.  I'm still listing Vintage linens on eBay for any of you that might be interested.  If you scroll to the bottom you'll see my eBay listings on my Plumdrop showcase.

Til tomorrow...
Peace out.

Hellooooooo Ooouuuut Therrrrrrrrre....

YES, I'm new to this, YES I make Jewelry, YES my husband says I'm spoiled and that I think everything should happen when I think it should happen - so that being said "Where Are You?"
Patience they say...Well, I'm a Libra and I'm not good at being patient, and I've always had more attention then I needed or wanted, so where are all of my admirers?
Whining you say?
Sigh!
Alright, I'll snap out of it - I've been sniffly and sick all week but I am definitely feeling better today...

Last night on DWTS, I was good with the results, but what did you think of co-hosts' Samantha Harris' bib necklace?  Wasn't that spectacular?  Well, I loved it.  You know there is no reason to see "celebrity" type jewelry only on celebrities. As a teen or young adult I would never have worn anything that made such a bold statement - but today I sure would.  AND, I'd make one for you too if you would wear one.
I think it has to do with becoming comfortable in your own skin - truly understanding what works for you and also knowing how to make such a statement without looking silly or clownish.  I have some large statement type rings in my store that are definitely not for everyone.  But me...I have to keep my willpower nice and strong so that I can sell these rings to YOU!

Now this ring is Jade and it is set in Sterling Silver and trimmed with Cubic Zirconia.  It is a size 7, and weighs in at a ful 9.9 grams! We're talking 24 x 20mm.  It's gorgeous! How about $45.00? Well - Check out my web shop where it is for sale. That would be at  http://www.janaesjewelsandjems.com/.

Keeping It Simple...

I have done quite a few jewelry listings today on Etsy - will do vintage linens tonight on eBay. As I expand my internet horizons trying to expand my online jewelry business I keep trying to figure out the right formula for success.

Now - I understand the jewelry market is saturated and has been for quite some time - but do you know exactly what it is that the consumer is looking for? I don't know that I believe it is totally price driven...so what is it?

Well - until I have answers, I have decided to keep it simple. Same quality materials in sterling silver and solid golds, same genuine semi-precious and precious gemstones but the designs are less complex.

Today I made a simple Sterling Silver necklace of faceted 8-9mm Tourmaline rondels. 17.5 inches, with 7 wired muli-colored tourmaline pendants. I missed the afternoon sun, so the color is not that great. What's the price you ask? $29.99 in my Etsy store.

Maybe I'll make a pair of matching earrings...
And seriously folks - would love your comments - don't be shy now.
Peace Out

All of My Best Laid Plans...Gone to the Sniffles

Yes, I finally got caught by the cold that has been visiting my immediate family over the past three to four weeks. So, my jewelry production rate for a Monday is really low BUT I've been spending time reading blogs, etsy forums and taking my fellow crafters advice in joining up and coming craft sites.

Thanks to Divine3Designs for the lead in to MyCraftCorner...a new site which has much to offer. ALSO, for the lead to http://entrecard.com/rr/54056 (for free) which is a blog promotion service.

I'm pretty diverse in my jewelry crafting abilities but there is so much more that I want to learn. I get excited at the opportunities in metalsmithing and last night got psyched up reading (once again) about Art Clay in Sterling Silver and Gold. I actually bought some of the SS and tools a couple of years ago but never took the time to really "learn" how to use it. So, last night I googled for "gold art clay" and "pmc art clay" and actually didn't find much in the way of product but I did find a really great review on eBay with some great tips and a bibliography. On Etsy I was able to find one of the acclaimed and recommended books, Art Clay Silver and Gold by Jackie Trudy, so I bought it.

I cannot give up on my love of solid gold though I know that it's pricey - but with what the average person spends over a lifetime in jewelry, why not keep a few pieces budgeted that will last a lifetime. No slam on fashion jewelry - I am also drawn to that - I just want all of you to look at the affordability of yellow, rose and white gold used in gemstone designs.

Check out my 14K Yellow Gold Bracelet with Swarovski Crystals, Cocoa Brown Akoya Pearls and Smoky Quartz. It's listed for $38.99. Affordable? Let me know what you think.
Until tomorrow...

Are Your Prices Set in Stone?

Had a flurry of miscellaneous sales on eBay over the weekend...look to be pre-Holiday sales. My buyers are looking for bargains. I can't say that I blame them as I shop in the "clearance" aisles first myself!
I need to know Dear Jewelry Community, are you offended when a buyer asks for a deal on an item with a set price? In searching forums all over the Internet I see that many buyers are annoyed by potential buyers that make an offer lower than the posted price...
These are my thoughts.
I would love to sell all of my fine jewelry at top dollar but I always take into consideration..
a. How long has it been in inventory?
b. Am I better off holding on to it - or - selling it?
c. Would fabulous feedback encourage other buyers?
So, I take all offers on a case by case basis.

As a long-term eBay seller, I have learned that you have to take risks. eBay offers you an option to list an item with a set price and also a "best offer" opportunity. I use this on higher price items that I may or may not be willing to part with at the "best offer" price. Most times a successful purchase involves some negotiation between the buyer and myself - but that's OK. It works by way of moving inventory into the marketplace, word of mouth praise through feedback you see and so much more that you cannot see.

So, would I be offended if a potential Etsy buyer convo's me to make a deal on multiple purchases or makes an offer on a higher priced item? Heck no, only I can make that decision based on my sales, my overhead, my profit margins and my life on that particular day.

Take Chances! The competition is stiff out there...

It's a Fab Friday on the East Coast...

Have you noticed that personalization in jewelry is back in a big way?
I am seeing more requests for initials/names engraved on sterling silver and incorporated into bracelet and necklace designs...not only for teens, but for Moms and Grandmothers alike.

How about single sterling silver ovals, rounds or hearts on a bracelet...or spell out each childs name and mix it up with gemstones for a memorable necklace? Looks like a trend for the Holidays - and I'm ready - so bring it on! My favorite jewelers Greg Levin and Ernie Ross at Ernie Ross Jewelers are ready (and kind enough) to do all the engraving that I need which saves me the expense of purchasing equipment.

Speaking of jewelers...don't forget that I do partner with Greg Levin who is one of the most talented bench jewelers in my region. If you are looking for a specific design in precious metals of any kind, just reach out to me on this blog or convo me through my Etsy Shop (see link below) for a custom design of heirloom quality.

So what trends are you seeing?

Today is a HodgePodge...

You know...when you have a million things to do and hope you have the stamina and fortitude to stay focused and complete the tasks!

So far today...I have scoured Etsy's Alchemy for projects to bid on...

Gone through Etsy forums and turned on my Google Alerts ...

Seen that on new Etsy listings "Google Preview" is now working and you may need to tweak your titles to get your best exposure

Ended up trashing yetserdays Amethyst necklace...just could not feel it as it progressed so bagged the components for another time...BUT...did make a couple of cool items..
Check out my blue graphic feldspar necklace and (sort of) matching bacelet with sterling silver.
The blue is so dark blue it looks black to me but I just went with it and used focals in blue/black chalcedony - so I'm calling it black...what about you?
After I post my pics here will push for the rest of the day...got orders to mail, errands to do etc, etc, etc
Til tomorrow!

New Gemstones and Sterling Silver

I was excited to receive new shipments of jewels and jems consisting of Sapphires, Rubies, Emeralds and much, much more over the last few days so...last night while watching the ladies of Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) I was wracking my brain for some "NEW" inspiration.

After staring at my new pretties for awhile, I started with some Amethyst back drilled Marquise gemstones paired with Swarovski crystals in 4-5mm and 6-8mm. After some experimentation, I have designed a double strand that will attach via amethyst and sterling silver components to either a single strand or double strand of sterling silver chain.

Can't wait to finish - should be easy since it is in my head now. Just waiting now for UPS to deliver some findings and components for me to choose from. I'll be sure to publish the results and see what you think...

Any new ideas from you?

Let's have an Open Conversation...

What can I do to help you today?
What can I learn from You today?

If you are an online seller you know that the competition is really tough. I design and craft jewelry for all occasions - so what makes me stand out in the crowd?
Is it my one of a kind designs?
Is it my quality metals, gemstones and attention to detail?
Is it my Brand? Pictures? Creativity?

I strive every day to try something new, to incorporate fresh ideas, to inspire new sales, to reach more of you.

Let's share together...Let's see where this goes!
